The WASH Sector in North-East Nigeria supports a coordinated, strategic and effective humanitarian water, sanitation and hygiene response for conflict-affected populations across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) States. GPON is recruiting a dedicated WASH Sector NGO Co-Coordinator to work closely with UNICEF and sector partners to strengthen coordination, improve information flow, promote standards, support joint analysis and planning, and ensure inclusive engagement of NGOs (including national and local partners).

Purpose of the position

To support effective and inclusive WASH Sector coordination across BAY States by facilitating partner engagement, consolidating field realities into clear coordination actions, strengthening information management and preparedness, and supporting principled advocacy for timely and adequate humanitarian WASH response.

Key responsibilities

Coordination and partner engagement

Co-chair WASH Sector coordination meetings with UNICEF and ensure clear agendas, timely minutes and follow-up on agreed action points.
Maintain active engagement with WASH Sector members, including national NGOs, local partners and INGOs, and support inclusive participation.
Support field-level coordination across BAY States, including linkages with state and LGA coordination platforms and government counterparts.
Promote collaboration and problem-solving among partners to reduce duplication and improve geographic and technical coverage.

Information management and analysis

Support partner reporting and the consolidation of key sector information (e.g., partner presence, activities, gaps and constraints).
Promote data quality and timely sharing of updates to inform operational decisions and strategic priorities.
Support joint analysis of needs, gaps and risks, and translate findings into concise coordination updates and recommendations.

Planning, preparedness and technical support

Contribute to sector planning processes and support partners to align with agreed strategies, standards and guidance.
Support preparedness and contingency planning for priority risks in BAY States (e.g., flooding, cholera and displacement).
Facilitate capacity-strengthening initiatives for partners through practical guidance, tools, trainings and workshops.

Representation and advocacy support

Represent NGO perspectives within WASH Sector discussions and relevant inter-sector coordination forums.
Support the development of evidence-based advocacy messages by consolidating partner inputs on key constraints and priorities.
Promote principled, accountable and community-informed coordination practices in line with humanitarian principles.

Person specification

Education

Advanced university degree in WASH, public health, engineering or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience).

Experience

Minimum 3 years’ experience in humanitarian WASH programming in complex or emergency contexts.
Minimum 2 years’ experience in humanitarian coordination or in a coordination-heavy role (cluster/sector, consortium, or multi-partner platforms).
Experience facilitating meetings, building consensus and coordinating diverse stakeholders (NGOs, UN, government).
Experience supporting needs analysis, gap mapping, preparedness and/or response planning.
Experience working in North-East Nigeria or comparable contexts is an advantage.

Skills and competencies

Strong facilitation, negotiation and relationship management skills; ability to work across organizational mandates.
Strong analytical and writing skills; ability to synthesize operational information into clear updates and action points.
Good understanding of humanitarian coordination mechanisms, WASH standards and accountability principles.
Strong digital skills (spreadsheets, presentations, online collaboration tools) and comfort working with structured data.
High integrity, diplomacy and ability to maintain neutrality in a coordination role.

Languages

Fluency in English (written and spoken).
