Mechanical Technicians (HVAC & Plumbing) at Museum of West African Art

Our ambitions span the delivery of world-class research, educational and scientific goals, aligned with a cultural and economic regeneration of the city more broadly. This involves the set-up of a major collections and research facility, the MOWAA Pavilion, and the wider development of a creative district in the heart of Benin City.
The Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) is looking to hire two skilled Mechanical Technicians – one specializing in HVAC systems and one in Plumbing. These roles are vital in ensuring the smooth operation of the museum’s critical building services, safeguarding both our collections and visitor comfort.

The Mechanical Technicians will carry out routine inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs across assigned systems while upholding the highest safety and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Repairs

Perform preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on assigned systems:

HVAC Technician: Air handling units, chillers, split units, FCUs, AHUs, and ventilation systems.
Plumbing Technician: Water supply and drainage systems, sewage pumps, booster pumps, and fire suppression/sprinkler systems.

Diagnose and repair faults promptly to minimize downtime.
Replace defective parts, lubricate moving equipment, and carry out necessary calibration.

Monitoring & System Checks

Conduct daily inspections of equipment and record operational data (temperature, pressure, humidity, water flow, etc.).
Support environmental controls essential for artifact preservation (temperature & humidity regulation).
Monitor and operate Building Management Systems (BMS) to track performance and alarms.

Installation & Support

Assist in the installation, commissioning, and testing of new HVAC or plumbing systems.
Support museum exhibitions by ensuring mechanical and environmental requirements are met.

Compliance & Safety

Follow all HSE and museum safety protocols during maintenance and repair activities.
Maintain accurate logs of inspections, test results, and completed tasks.
Report hazards and propose corrective actions when necessary.

Collaboration & Reporting

Work closely with electrical, ELV, and facilities teams for integrated building operations.
Provide support to contractors and vendors when required.
Report recurring issues and escalate major faults to the Mechanical Supervisor.

Qualifications & Requirements

OND/HND or Technical Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, Plumbing, or related field.
2–5 years of hands-on experience in mechanical maintenance within commercial, institutional, or critical facility environments.
HVAC Technician: Strong knowledge of HVAC equipment, load balancing, and environmental controls.
Plumbing Technician: Expertise in pumps, piping systems, water distribution, sewage, and fire protection equipment.
Ability to read mechanical drawings and use diagnostic tools (pressure gauges, thermometers, flow meters).
Familiarity with BMS/CMMS systems is an advantage.
Trade certifications in HVAC/Plumbing and HSE training are a plus.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and respond to emergencies.
